1 year check and one where I ramble about Vaccines AGAIN.

This week Zeland had his one year check up. He is 30 and 3/4 inches long and 21 pounds putting him in the 30th percentile for weight and the 70th percentile for height. All in all we had a great visit. We went over some developmental milestones and of course Zeland is right on track. She was pleased to see he was walking and that he is doing well with the transition from formula to milk. We will be working on slowly weaning Z from the bottle within the next few months. Oh what a glorious day that will be when we have no bottles to wash and schlep around.

We opted to only do one of the shots today instead of the four they wanted to give him MMR ( measles, mumps and rubella ), Chicken Pox, Hep and Polio. We decided to do the Polio Vaccine only. I absolutely refuse to do the MMR all in one vaccine and would much prefer to give Zeland this vaccine in three separate shots. Possible side affects of the MMR are Atypical measles, arthritis, encephalitis, DEATH , aseptic meningitis, nerve deafness, otitis media (ear infection)besides all these documented side effects I have the possible link to Autism to think about. I will not pump my child with so many chemicals at one time. I get that vaccines are important but what is the need in giving him 4 (6 if you include the 3 in 1 MMR ) shots all at the same time. Here are some of the ingredients that would be pumped into Zelands tiny body if I allowed him to get all the recommended vaccines: Chick Embryo Fibroblasts , Monkey Kidney Tissue , Newborn Calf Serum Protein , Formaldehyde and Aluminum just to name a few. This list makes me sick to my stomach that I even have to inject my child with any of these but again I get it, vaccines are important, however there is no way in heck that I will risk my child because a doctor tells me giving Zeland more then one vaccine is perfectly safe and we shouldn't question that. I would like to call bull@#&!t on that thank you very much!

According to our pediatrician and our local health department they are not stocking the MMR vaccine into its separate components due to having to buy in large quantity and not having the demand for the separate vaccines. I have a few other places to call before I make a decision on what to do. If I can't find anywhere that will split the vaccine I basically have two choices:

1. Give him the full vaccine and pray that he is fine and has no side affects. God is good and the power of prayer is amazing but my gut tells me that giving him the MMR all in one vaccine is a BAD idea.

2. My second option is to delay the MMR vaccine until Zeland is older some recommend waiting until at least two sometimes four depending on the level of interaction your child has with other children. As you know Zeland does go to daycare so the longest I would consider delaying is until Zeland is 2.

Hopefully next week I can find somewhere that can help me if not we will make a decision on what to do. I am going to step off my soap box now but not before some super cute, blurry cell pics from our visit to the Doctor.

I support you all the way. I don't think giving all the vaccines at once is a good idea. However, it is so hard to know what to do especially when you go against the Doctor's advice. I'm not sure that doctors always know what's right for a certain individual. But going against them causes a lot of conflict. I am currently dealing with a couple of issues where I'm not sure if the doctor knows best. And I'm also not sure if I am right. But on the issue of vaccines for babies, I would agree that the fewer at a time, the better. Stick to your guns. I'm just glad we didn't have so many at a time when my boys were babies. I think the most they got at once was 3--measles, mumps, rubella.

As always, love the pictures. Zeland is such a cutie.

Thanks Nancy. I think it is always wise to be involved in decisions about your healthcare ecpecially when you are talking about your children. You just have to find a Doc willing to work with you. Our ped Doctors are great and don't give me to much grief. Gald you like the pics! See you soon!
