2 month check-up

Today we had our two month check up with Dr. Vargas. Zeland is 12 pounds and 23 3/4 inches long. This puts Mr. Z in the 38th percentile for weight and the 61th percentile for height. Dr. Vargas said that Zeland is fantastic and seems to be a happy healthy baby. One concern we did have was Zeland's pooping habits. He only does his business about once a day. Dr. Vargas said that this is perfectly normal for a formula fed baby and that even if he went a day or two without pooping it was normal.

Another concern of mine was vaccinations. I have been doing a lot of research and Andrew and I decided that it was best to limit the number of shots Zeland would get at one time. We are using an alternative shot schedule which is recommended in a book I read by Dr. Sears. This allows Zeland to get all the recommended shots, but will minimize potential risks. I was so nervous about bringing this up to Dr. Vargas in fear that he would not see us as patients anymore. I went into it ready with all the facts and ready to debate but he was really cool. He said he wants us to be comfortable with what is happening with our baby. Mostly the burden of this will be on us, we will have to go to the doctor once a month and pay more co-pays than normal, but for me this is well worth it as apposed to the risk of something happening to Zeland that could have been prevented. Here are a few differences with the alternative Schedule:

1. Zeland will only get one shot at a time that contains aluminum, by spreading the aluminum shots out like this infants can process the aluminum without it reaching toxic levels which can be harmful.
2. Zeland will never get more then two vaccinations at one time this limits and spreads out the exposure to numerous chemicals so he can process each more individually.
3. This schedule starts out with the most important shots, the ones that prevent diseases that are most threatening to infants.
4.It delays shots that the baby is extremely unlikely to catch during the first years of life (ie:polio)
5. Zeland will only get one live virus at a time.(rotavirus,nasal-spry flu, separate M,M,and R,chickenpox). Normally he would get the MMR all together, but by splitting this vaccine up it can decreases the risk of autism and other harmful reactions. (boys have a higher risk of autism)
6 If Zeland has a reaction to a vaccine we can better isolate which one caused it because he is getting so few at a time.
Zeland was given the vaccination DTap which is for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough). He also was given the oral vaccine rotavirus.

Okay on a lighter note we recieved a package friday that was the last remaining gifts off the baby registry with no indication of who it was from. We really would like to thank whoever sent it so if anyone has any clues, let us know.

I'm really impressed with all the research you did on the shots and vaccinations. Glad your doctor is fine with your decision. Also glad Zeland is a healthy baby. I don't think I understand the percentile thing. Does being in the 68 percentile for height mean that 68 per cent of babies are taller than Z? I wonder how much this percentile stuff means anyway. I guess it's just one way doctors can assess the baby's growth. Nancy

Wow, I'm impressed too!

I decided not to research it, just because I generally believe in vaccinations and just want to do what's best for her. That's with the assumption that doctors wouldn't intentionally do anything to hurt her.

I guess I'm not re-thinking our choice (I liked getting them all out of the way at once), but I do know autism is more prevalent in boys and I'm really glad you're taking precautions with him while still giving him all the vaccines he needs. If we ever have a boy I'll be asking for the schedule you used :)

Nancy, 68th percentile means that he's taller than 68% of other babies his age. So he's a tall little guy!

I think that you have to decide whats best for you and just go with your gut. Cameron was fully vaccinated on the recommended schedule and he was fine.
I have heard about people who have little boys who are normal kids one day talking and playing and then the next thing they know they stop talking and stop looking at their parents. Autism freaks me out! (if you haven't noticed). I decided that there was no harm in using this alternative schedule and take that extra step. Again you have to do what you feel comfortable with. I am sure Aurora and Big Z are going to be healthy happy babies regardless.

It is interesting to note the possible relationship of autism with vacinations. We have friends that adopted an infant boy (from Cheezland) several years ago that we think has autism, although his parents never discuss it. Sounds like you probably have made some good decisions. Congrats on all the research.

I am so happy that you are doing this!! I think it's great when people research important things like this that could potentially affect your baby for the rest of their life instead of blindly trusting doctors. These shots are filled with mercury, aluminum and formaldehyde. That's whats being pumped into a little tiny baby! And don't feel bad about speaking up.... YOU PAY THEM!!!

love ya! ~NIKI
P.s.....(if no one has claimed it yet) the package was from me!
